Texas schools face enrollment crisis |
Texas public school enrollment has dropped by 76,000 students from the 2024-25 to the 2025-26 school year, with East Texas experiencing relatively minor losses. The Texas 2036 policy research group, using data from the Texas Education Agency, predicts further declines could occur, impacting funding tied to attendance. Matthew Prosser, chief of strategic initiatives for Longview ISD, said: “The causes identified include smaller birth cohorts working their way through the grade levels, shifting migration patterns, and population movement between communities.” While some regions saw significant losses, Longview ISD's enrollment decreased by 215 students, while Tyler ISD gained 146 students. The reasons for the overall decline remain unclear, with factors such as immigration fears, declining birth rates, and a shift towards private schooling and homeschooling being considered.
